How to Remotely Restart a PoE IP camera or PoE Device
PoE-powered devices such as IP cameras, IP speakers, wireless bridges, access control terminals (alarms), and edge computing gateways are widely deployed in remote locations where physical access is limited. In these environments, remote reboot or power cycling of PoE devices has become a critical requirement for maintaining system reliability.
Typical applications include solar-powered surveillance trailers, construction sites, oil and gas facilities, utility substations, traffic monitoring systems, and agricultural monitoring stations.
Even industrial-grade PoE devices may become unresponsive due to power instability, network issues (such as storms or routing loops), control-plane overload, or environmental factors. When devices stop responding, manual maintenance is often inefficient and costly.
To address this challenge, several remote PoE reboot methods are available that allow operators to restore device functionality without on-site intervention. In many cases, a simple power cycle is sufficient to recover normal operation.
This article introduces four practical methods for remote PoE device rebooting, along with their advantages and limitations.
Method 1: Restart Through the Device Web Interface or Mobile App
Many modern IP cameras and network devices support remote reboot functions through:

The process is straightforward:

Log into the device.

Navigate to the maintenance section.

Select Reboot or Restart.

Confirm the operation.
Advantages

Limitations
This method only works when the device remains reachable.
If the device is frozen, disconnected, or completely unresponsive, remote login becomes impossible and another restart method is required.
Method 2: Restart PoE Switch's Specific Port
A L2/L3 managed PoE switch can remotely disable and re-enable power on individual PoE ports.
Since the camera receives both power and data through the Ethernet cable, toggling the PoE port effectively reboots the camera.
Typical Procedure

Log into the managed switch.

Locate the connected PoE port.

Disable PoE on that port.

Wait several seconds.
-
Re-enable PoE.
The camera will automatically restart.

Limitations
The switch itself must remain accessible.
If the switch becomes unreachable, this method cannot be used.(Some cloud-managed PoE switches provide remote access through centralized management platforms, allowing administrators to restart ports from anywhere.)
Method 3: Restart PoE Switch Power via I/O Relay
If the PoE switch is unmanaged, or if you cannot access the switch Web GUI, restarting an individual PoE port may not be possible.
In this case, you can use a network I/O controller and an external relay to remotely power-cycle the camera by power-cycle the POE switch.

How It Works
The network I/O controller provides a Digital Output (DO).
The DO serves as a control signal but usually cannot directly carry enough voltage or current to restart a PoE camera or PoE switch.
Instead:

Digital Output activates a relay.
-
The relay interrupts the DC power feeding the PoE switch.
-
The switch powers off.
-
After several seconds, power is restored.

The switch and connected cameras reboot.
Recommended Wiring Method
The relay should be installed on the DC input side of the PoE switch.
For maximum reliability:

Use the relay's Normally Closed (NC) contact.
-
Keep power flowing during normal operation.
-
Open the circuit only during a reboot command.
The relay contact rating must exceed the actual voltage and current being switched.
For many Linovision solar-powered surveillance systems, the DC supply voltage is typically between 12V and 14V DC.

Limitations
If power to the entire PoE switch is interrupted, all cameras connected to that switch will reboot simultaneously.

Many third-party devices provide remote Digital Output functionality, including:

Cellular routers(Provide DI/DO terminals, such as Teltonika RUT956 or Linovision IOT-R32W)
Examples include devices with built-in DI/DO interfaces that can trigger external relays remotely.
Method 4: Restart PoE Switch Power with Built-In I/O Relay (Remote Hard Reboot Capability)
If a PoE Switch support restart triggers directly from Cellular router's Digital Output, things can be much easier.
